According to a study conducted at the Freie University in Germany, ecdysterone may be a particularly effective supplement for building strength and resistance. Ecdysterone is a molting steroid compound that occurs naturally in some insects and plants, including spinach, quinoa, and others. Mainly in the form of supplements to improve muscle growth and performance
Given that the compound has only recently become more widely available to the public as a supplement, reliable research on the compound is generally limited. Based on existing research and testimonials, here's what we know about its potential benefits:
1. It may help build muscle
Ecdysterone is thought to help increase protein synthesis, which means that it may be easier to increase muscle mass when you consistently do strength training.
Some studies suggest that it has a high "anabolic rate," meaning that it may help increase:
· Stimulates muscle cell formation (anabolism)
· Proteins synthesize amino acids
· erythropoiesis
· Bone remodeling and growth
Echinone is thought to have anabolic effects mediated by its estrogen receptor (ER) binding properties. ERβ signaling is involved in regulating skeletal muscle growth and regeneration and regulating immune function.
Ecdysterone also appears to support muscle protein synthesis by affecting the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.
A 2015 study conducted in rats found that ecdysterone exhibited a strong hypertrophic effect on the fiber size of certain muscles in rats, even stronger than other steroid compounds, including medidione, estradiol dione, and ARM-S-1, when administered at the same dose.
2. May help improve insulin sensitivity
While more research on this topic is warranted, at least one animal study has found that ecdysterone supplements can support metabolic health, including protection against insulin resistance, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar associated with type 2 diabetes), and obesity.
A 2009 study found that daily oral ecdysterone (at a dose of 10 mg per kilogram of body weight for 13 weeks) improved obesity and insulin resistance in rats. The rats were fed a high-fat diet, but this supplement appeared to prevent weight gain and a significant increase in the amount of body fat compared to untreated animals.
Plasma insulin levels and glucose tolerance were also significantly reduced in the ecdysterone group.
3. May support immune function
Ecdysteroid seems to have some adaptive effects that can help the body cope with stress and pathogens. The compound may support homeostasis and immune function in the following ways:
· Increases the red blood cell count
· Improves sleep quality
· Increased tolerance to thermal stress
· supports heart function and circulation
· Stimulates bone growth
· has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Hydroxypropyl betacyclodextrin combined with ecdysterone may aid in absorption and may lead to additional benefits
